Overview

Kollam (Quilon) is one of the oldest ports on the Malabar Coast, with a rich history of spice trade dating back to Phoenician and Roman times. Today it is the gateway to the Ashtamudi backwaters, home to the world's largest bird sculpture at Jatayu Earth Centre, and blessed with unspoilt beaches, historic lighthouses, and the famous cashew industry of Kerala.

You have various options for a boat ride in the lake. Government ferries between Kollam and Alappuzha are available from the Kollam bus-station. Many hotels near the lake offer house boat journeys. Another option is to take a boat ride from the picnic village in Ashramom, which is located on the banks of the lake. The picnic village offers a variety of boat rides, including traditional kettuvallams (houseboats) and speedboats, allowing you to explore the lake's beauty at your own pace.

You will get to watch local fishermen at work, and various bird species while you take a relaxing boat ride.

Jatayu Earth Centre

Jatayu Earth Centre

World's largest bird sculpture and park dedicated to Jatayu, the mythical bird from Indian Epic Ramayana. The park is about 37 kilometers from Kollam City Center

For adventure enthusiasts, Jatayu Earth Center offers a range of activities across its 20-acre Adventure Zone. These include rock climbing, rappelling, zip-lining, paintball, archery, and valley crossing.

The Siddha Cave Healing Center within the park provides traditional Ayurvedic therapies, yoga sessions, and herbal treatments in a tranquil environment.

The centerpiece of the park is the world's largest bird sculpture. Measuring 200 feet in length, 150 feet in width, and 70 feet in height, the colossal structure stands as a tribute to Jatayu's bravery and sacrifice. Inside the sculpture, visitors can explore a museum and an audio-visual gallery narrating the story of Jatayu. From the top of the sculpture, breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys offer a visual treat for visitors.

Paravur Lake

There is a range of boating options available at the water rafting club here where the Arabian Sea, river and the Kappil backwaters merge. The mangroves that line the lake also contribute to its beauty and allure. Try kayaking through the waters to make the best of the location. Kayaking through the mangrove forest to the Black Devil Snail Sandbar Island in Paravoor Lake is a fascinating experience.

The sandbar frequently changes shape due to shifting tides and water currents. Swim, relax and watch the sunset or sunrise from here. The mangrove forest is a sight to behold with its dense foliage.

There are many Kayaking options. Syzygy Ecosports is a great option for Kayaking. They provide you options for 3 Kms Kayak trip, 10 Kms Kayak trip, Kayaking with breakfast in an island etc. The other options are Mangrove Meadows and Adventures, Dream Village Adventures, Aqua Heaven, Mangrove Safari, Mangrove Aqua World, etc.

Chinnakkada

Chinnakkada

Chinnakkada is the bustling commercial heart of Kollam city, known for its vibrant markets, diverse shopping options, and lively atmosphere.

The area is a hub for local commerce, offering everything from traditional Kerala spices and textiles to modern electronics and fashion. Visitors can explore the narrow streets filled with shops, street vendors, and eateries. You will find spice shops, Cashew nut shops, Banana Frys made on the street, and more. Chinnakkada is also home to several historic landmarks and temples, adding to its charm and appeal as a must-visit destination in Kollam.

Try walking through the markets to Chamakkada Godown area and view the trading for spices, coir etc. Try sampling banana fries and cashew nuts from the shops in the area.

Try the Fayalwan restaurant in Chinnakkada for a tea and beef roast. Kollam had a history of mud-wrestling and the Fayalwan hotel stands in testimony to that. The owner of the restaurant was a famous Fayalwan (wrestler) in his prime, and you will find photos of wrestlers on the restaurant walls.

Thangassery

Thangassery

Thangassery Lighthouse is a historic maritime landmark located in the coastal town of Thangassery, in the Kollam district of Kerala. The lighthouse features a cylindrical tower with a lantern room at the top, offering panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and the Arabian Sea. You can buy a ticket at the light house and climb the 200 or so cylindrical steps to the top. The lighthouse is open from 10 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM, and is closed on Mondays.

Near to the Light house you can find the remnants of a 16th Century fort built by the Portugese. The fort was later occupied by the Dutch and then the British, and it played a significant role in the region's history as a strategic trading post. Today, visitors can explore the fort's ruins, which is just a couple of huge walls next to the sea.

Tangassery was home to an Anglo-indian community. You can still find a few old Anglo-Indian cottages in Tangessery, with a distinct architecture.

While at Tangassery, visit the nearby beach and breakwater as well. The breakwater is open from 2 PM to 8 PM. You can walk through the breakwater for more than a kilometer into the sea and watch the waves crash against the rocks. You will find traditional fishermen landing their boats in the beachside and selling their catch of the day. The beach is also a great place to watch the sunset. If you are unable to visit the breakwater, head to the nearby Vadi fishing harbour to watch fresh catches being auctioned โ€” a lively and authentic local experience.

Ashramam Picnic Village is a popular recreational area next to Ashtamudi Lake. You will find natural mangrove forrests in the park. The village features lush greenery, well-maintained gardens, and a variety of amenities for visitors to enjoy.

Aqua parasailing is being introduced here for the first time in Kerala. There are banana boat rides, kayaking and jet ski options. The park also has a children's play area, a boating club, and a museum showcasing the cultural heritage of the region.

There are few art museums and cafes around the picnic village. 8 Point art cafe is a popular spot and hosts art exhibitions. The picnic village is a great place for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking to unwind amidst the beauty of Ashtamudi Lake. A Ramachandran Museum is a must-visit location for modern art lovers.

Kaveri Elephant Park

Punalur Suspension Bridge

Punalur Suspension Bridge

With massive, towering stone arches, this unique 400-ft bridge was set up in 1877. It remains suspended from iron chains, one end of all of them being connected to the insides of four huge wells.

The bridge was constructed under the supervision of the British engineer Albert Henry. The construction began in 1871, and most of the materials were imported from England. The bridge is a mix of iron, wood and masonry. The wood used was Kambam wood.

The bridge is now a protected monument under the Archaeological Department of Kerala, and is open only to pedestrians.

Consider visiting the nearby deer park, Palaruvi Waterfalls, and Thenmala Eco-tourism while you are at Punalur Suspension Bridge.
