Which ration card category is mine?

Most people don't know which of these four categories their card falls under. Here's a plain-language guide — check your card, or confirm at your local ration shop, before assuming which price table below applies to you.

AAY — Antyodaya Anna Yojana

For the poorest and most vulnerable households — destitute families, widows or the terminally ill with no one to support them, elderly people with no regular income, and other groups identified by the state as most in need. AAY cardholders get the largest quantities, and most of it free.

PHH — Priority House Holds

Households identified as priority under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), based on income and other socio-economic criteria set by the state. Unlike AAY, PHH entitlements are calculated per person in the household ("per unit"), not a flat amount per card.

NPS — Non-Priority Subsidised

Households that don't qualify as NFSA priority (PHH) households, but still receive a state subsidy on ration commodities — at a lower subsidy level than PHH or AAY. Also calculated per person ("per unit").

NPNS — Non-Priority Non-Subsidised

Households above the priority list, buying ration commodities at rates closer to procurement cost, with little subsidy. Calculated per card, like AAY.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AAY ration card?

AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) is the ration card category for the poorest and most vulnerable households in Kerala — including destitute families, widows or terminally ill people with no one to support them, and elderly people with no regular income. AAY cardholders receive the largest entitlements, and most staples (rice and wheat) free of cost.

How much rice does a PHH card get?

A PHH (Priority House Hold) card gets 4 kg of rice per person in the household (per unit) — free of cost — as of the rates published on epos.kerala.gov.in. This applies to boiled rice, fortified boiled rice, fortified custom milled rice, fortified raw rice, matta rice and raw rice.

Why did my ration price change?

Ration prices in Kerala are set by government notification, not on a fixed schedule — they're revised periodically based on procurement costs, the state's subsidy budget, or if your card's category is reclassified. Always confirm the current rate at your ration shop, since published rates (including on this page) can lag a very recent notification.

How do I find out my ration card category?

Your ration card category (AAY, PHH, NPS or NPNS) is printed on the card itself. You can also check it, or apply for a new card, at civilsupplieskerala.gov.in or your local ration shop / taluk supply office.

What does "per unit" mean on a ration card?

"Per unit" means the entitlement is calculated per person registered on the card, not as one flat amount for the whole household — used for PHH and NPS cards. AAY and NPNS cards, by contrast, get a fixed entitlement per card regardless of household size.
