South Kerala — Beaches & Backwaters

Kovalam or Varkala beaches, Ayurvedic massage, Trivandrum city sightseeing, a scenic train ride to Alappuzha, and an overnight houseboat cruise through the backwaters.

A 4–5 day journey through South Kerala — from the golden beaches of Kovalam or the dramatic cliffs of Varkala, through the cultural heart of Trivandrum, to the legendary backwaters of Alappuzha on an overnight houseboat. This itinerary combines beach relaxation, Ayurvedic wellness, city heritage, and the iconic Kerala backwater experience. We recommend taking the train from Thiruvananthapuram to Alappuzha — the scenic 2-hour-15-minute journey through coconut groves and paddy fields is far more enjoyable than the 4.5-hour road trip.

🏖️Stay at Kovalam or Varkala for Days 1–2, take the train to Alappuzha on Day 3, and spend the night on a houseboat. Day 4 explores Alappuzha town. Day 5 is optional — extend to Kochi or Munnar if you have more time.
Day 1

Arrive in Trivandrum — Settle in at Kovalam or Varkala Beach

Arrive at Trivandrum International Airport and head to the beach. Choose between Kovalam (16 km, 30 min) or Varkala (55 km, 1.5 hours). Spend the rest of the day relaxing at the beach and enjoying the sunset.

10:00 AM
🚗

Arrive at Trivandrum Airport / Railway Station

Collect your bags and arrange transport to your beach destination. Pre-paid taxis and app cabs (Uber/Ola) are available at both the airport and Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. If heading to Kovalam, the drive is about 30 minutes. For Varkala, it's roughly 1.5 hours.

💡 Kovalam is closer and great for a relaxed luxury beach stay. Varkala has dramatic cliff-top views, a more backpacker-friendly vibe, and the famous Papanasam Beach. Choose based on your style.

12:00 PM

Check In & Lunch

Check in to your hotel or homestay. Kovalam has options ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts like Leela Raviz and Taj Green Cove. Varkala has cliff-top cafés and charming homestays. Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch — grilled fish, prawns, or a Kerala fish curry with rice — at a beachside restaurant.

2:00 PM

Beach Time

Spend the afternoon at the beach. At Kovalam, explore the three crescent-shaped beaches — Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach, and Samudra Beach. Climb the Vizhinjam Lighthouse for panoramic views. At Varkala, walk along the dramatic North Cliff with its cafés and shops, and descend to the pristine Papanasam Beach where natural springs flow onto the sand.

💡 Papanasam Beach at Varkala is believed to wash away sins — it's also one of the few beaches in Kerala with mineral springs flowing directly onto the shore.

5:30 PM

Ayurvedic Massage

Treat yourself to a traditional Kerala Ayurvedic massage. Both Kovalam and Varkala are lined with Ayurvedic centres offering Abhyangam (full-body oil massage), Shirodhara (warm oil poured on the forehead), and Pizhichil (oil bath). A 60–90 minute session costs ₹1,500–₹4,000 depending on the centre and treatment.

💡 Look for government-certified Ayurvedic centres (Green Leaf or Olive Leaf certified by the Kerala Tourism Department) for authentic treatments. Avoid heavily touristy unlicensed shops.

6:30 PM

Sunset at the Beach

Watch the sun dip into the Arabian Sea — one of the most beautiful sunset experiences in Kerala. At Kovalam, the Lighthouse Beach or the rocks near the lighthouse offer the best views. At Varkala, the cliff-top restaurants provide a front-row seat to a spectacular sunset over the ocean.

8:00 PM

Dinner

Enjoy dinner at a beachside restaurant. Try the catch of the day — grilled kingfish, butter garlic prawns, or lobster. At Kovalam, Bait and Fusion are popular. At Varkala, the cliff-top restaurants like Café del Mar, Abba, or Darjeeling Café serve a mix of Kerala and international cuisine with ocean views.

Day 2

Trivandrum City — Museums, Temples & Markets

Spend a full day exploring Trivandrum's cultural highlights — world-class museums, the iconic Padmanabhaswamy Temple, bustling markets, and a palace.

8:00 AM
🚗

Drive to Trivandrum City

Drive from Kovalam (30 min) or Varkala (1.5 hours) to the heart of Trivandrum. If coming from Varkala, you can also take a local train to Thiruvananthapuram Central (about 1 hour, frequent services).

9:30 AM

Trivandrum Zoo & Museums

Start at the Trivandrum Zoo (one of India's oldest, established in 1859) and the cluster of museums in the same compound — Napier Museum (a stunning Indo-Saracenic building with bronze idols, ivory carvings, and a temple chariot), the Natural History Museum, Sri Chitra Art Gallery (with paintings by Raja Ravi Varma and works from Mughal, Rajput, and Tanjore schools), and the KCS Panikker Gallery. Allow 2–2.5 hours.

💡 Museums open at 10 AM (zoo at 9 AM). Closed on Mondays. Entry fee for the zoo is ₹20 for adults.

12:00 PM

Kanakakkunnu Palace

A short walk from the museum compound, this 19th-century palace was built by the Maharaja of Travancore and set amidst landscaped gardens. It's a popular venue for cultural events and festivals. Great for photos and a quick breather.

12:30 PM

Lunch

Head to a local restaurant near East Fort for an authentic Kerala Sadya (vegetarian feast on banana leaf). Try Ariya Nivaas for affordable traditional meals, Villa Maya for fine dining in a heritage mansion, or Zam Zam for Malabar-style biriyani and non-veg fare.

2:00 PM

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple & Puthen Malika Palace

Visit the iconic Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple — one of the richest temples in the world, with the deity of Lord Vishnu reclining on the serpent Anantha. The Dravidian architecture, the seven-storey gopuram, and the temple tank are magnificent. Right next door is the Puthen Malika Palace Museum (Kuthira Malika) — open to all visitors, featuring stunning Kerala architecture with 122 carved wooden horse figures, royal artefacts, and ivory thrones.

💡 The temple is open only to Hindus. Strict dress code: men must wear mundu (no shirts), women must wear saree or set-mundu. The best time to visit is during the evening darshan (5 PM–8 PM). The Puthen Malika Palace is open to all and closed on Mondays.

3:30 PM

Chalai Market

Walk through Trivandrum's oldest and busiest market, stretching over a kilometre from East Fort. A sensory overload — mounds of fresh spices, flowers, fruits, vegetables, brass lamps, textiles, and local handicrafts. Great for picking up souvenirs like pepper, cardamom, and traditional nilavilakku (oil lamps).

5:00 PM

Science & Technology Museum (Optional)

If you have children or an interest in science, visit the Priyadarsini Planetarium and the Science & Technology Museum near the museum compound. The planetarium shows are educational and entertaining.

6:30 PM
🚗

Return to Beach & Dinner

Drive back to your hotel at Kovalam or Varkala. If staying at Varkala, consider stopping at the Janardhanaswamy Temple — a 2,000-year-old cliff-top temple overlooking the sea. Have dinner at your resort or a favourite beachside spot.

Day 3

Travel to Alappuzha — Train Journey & Houseboat Check-In

Take a scenic train from Thiruvananthapuram to Alappuzha (2 hours 15 minutes) and board your overnight houseboat for a cruise through the legendary backwaters.

7:00 AM
🚗

Check Out & Head to Trivandrum Station

Check out of your hotel, grab breakfast, and drive to Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. From Kovalam it's about 30 minutes, from Varkala about 15 minutes to Varkala Sivagiri station (you can also board the train at Varkala).

8:30 AM

Train to Alappuzha

Board a train from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Alappuzha (Alleppey). The journey takes about 2 hours 15 minutes — far more scenic and comfortable than the 4.5-hour road journey. The train passes through coconut groves, paddy fields, and several backwater crossings. Multiple trains run daily on this route (Jan Shatabdi, Express, and Passenger services). Book tickets in advance on IRCTC.

💡 If staying at Varkala, board the train at Varkala Sivagiri station — it's on the same route and saves time. The Thiruvananthapuram–Alappuzha fare is around ₹70–₹300 depending on class (Sleeper to AC Chair Car). Book at irctc.co.in or use the IRCTC Rail Connect app.

11:00 AM
🚗

Arrive at Alappuzha

Arrive at Alappuzha Railway Station. The houseboat jetties are just 3–4 km from the station. Take an auto-rickshaw (₹100–₹150) to the Finishing Point Jetty or ATDC boat jetty, where most houseboats depart.

11:30 AM

Board the Houseboat (Kettuvallam)

Check in to your overnight houseboat — a traditional rice barge (kettuvallam) converted into a floating hotel with air-conditioned bedrooms, attached bathroom, dining area, and an open-air upper deck. Most overnight houseboats depart between 11 AM and 12 PM. Choose between the Alappuzha–Kuttanad route (south, through below-sea-level paddy fields and narrow village canals) or the Alappuzha–Kumarakom route (east, across Vembanad Lake).

💡 Book the houseboat in advance, especially during peak season (December–February). A standard 1-bedroom overnight houseboat costs ₹6,000–₹15,000. The Kuttanad route is more scenic for village life; the Kumarakom route is better for wide lake views. Confirm the route when booking.

12:30 PM

Lunch on the Houseboat

The boat crew prepares a fresh Kerala lunch on board — rice, sambar, avial, thoran, fish curry, and the star dish: Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish marinated in spices and baked in banana leaf). Dine on the open deck as the houseboat drifts past coconut palms, paddy fields, and village life.

2:00 PM

Cruise Through the Backwaters

The houseboat enters the heart of the backwaters. On the Kuttanad route, watch farmers tending rice paddies that sit metres below the waterline, toddy tappers climbing palms, fishermen casting Chinese-style nets, and children waving from the banks. On the Kumarakom route, the boat navigates wider canals and enters Vembanad Lake. Both routes pass through serene stretches of coconut-lined waterways.

4:30 PM

Punnamada Lake

The houseboat cruises into Punnamada Lake — the venue of the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race (held annually in August). The vast expanse of water, fringed by palms and dotted with country boats, is stunning in the late afternoon light. The boat may stop near small islands where vendors sell fried fish, banana chips, and fresh toddy.

6:00 PM

Sunset on the Backwaters

The boat anchors at a scenic spot for sunset. Watch the sky explode in gold, orange, and pink over the water — one of the most photographed moments in all of Kerala. The stillness of the backwaters at dusk, with the silhouettes of palm trees against the sky, is unforgettable.

7:30 PM

Dinner & Night on the Houseboat

The crew prepares a fresh dinner — prawns, fish, duck roast, rice, and seasonal vegetables. As night falls, the boat anchors in a quiet stretch of backwater. Dine on the deck under the stars, with the gentle lapping of water and the distant calls of night birds. Sleep rocked by the water — an experience unique to Kerala.

Day 4

Alappuzha — Beach, Temple & Town

Disembark from the houseboat and explore Alappuzha town — the historic beach pier, a sacred temple famous for its divine payasam, and the local town.

7:00 AM

Sunrise & Breakfast on the Houseboat

Wake up to sunrise over the backwaters — mist rising off the water, the first light filtering through palms, and the sounds of village life beginning. Enjoy breakfast on the deck — appam, egg curry, fresh fruit, and Kerala-style coffee. The boat returns to the jetty by mid-morning.

9:30 AM

Disembark & Visit Ambalapuzha Temple

Disembark at the Alappuzha jetty and drive to the Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple (about 15 km, 30 minutes). This 15th-century temple is famous for its divine Paal Payasam (milk pudding), offered as prasadam to all visitors. The payasam is legendary — the temple has a famous mythological story about Lord Krishna and the game of chess that led to an endless offering of rice and milk.

💡 Dress code applies — men should wear mundu/dhoti (no shirts), women should wear saree or salwar. The Paal Payasam is served free of charge and is a must-try.

11:30 AM

Alappuzha Beach & Pier

Walk along the Alappuzha beach promenade and the old sea bridge (pier) — one of the oldest on the Malabar coast, extending into the Arabian Sea. Visit Vijaya Beach Park, the lighthouse, and enjoy the sea breeze. Browse the food stalls for banana chips and fresh lime soda.

1:00 PM

Lunch in Alappuzha

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or toddy shop. Try the duck roast with appam, tapioca with fish curry, Karimeen fry, and fresh toddy at an authentic toddy shop. Or visit Thaff, Halais, or Cassia for a more conventional restaurant meal.

2:30 PM

Canoe Ride Through Village Canals

Take a country canoe or shikara ride through the narrow canals around Alappuzha — these intimate waterways are too narrow for houseboats and offer a closer look at village life. You'll pass homes with front doors opening onto the water, small temples, toddy tapping operations, and kingfishers diving for fish.

💡 A 1–2 hour canoe ride costs ₹500–₹1,500 and can be arranged near the boat jetty. These are the best way to see the real backwater village life up close.

5:00 PM
🚗

Evening & Departure

Depending on your onward plans: take an evening train back to Thiruvananthapuram (2 hours 15 minutes), head north to Kochi (1.5 hours by train), or stay overnight in Alappuzha. Several heritage homestays and canal-side hotels are available for a relaxed final night.

Day 5 (Optional)

Extend Your Trip — Kochi (Ernakulam) or Munnar

If you have extra days, continue north to Kochi for colonial heritage and cosmopolitan culture, or head east to Munnar for misty tea plantations in the Western Ghats.

Option A: Kochi (Ernakulam)

Take a train from Alappuzha to Ernakulam (1.5 hours, frequent services). Explore Fort Kochi — Chinese fishing nets at sunrise, St. Francis Church (where Vasco da Gama was originally buried), the Dutch Palace murals in Mattancherry, the 450-year-old Paradesi Synagogue, vibrant street art, and spice markets. End the day with a Kathakali performance and fresh seafood at the Fort Kochi waterfront. Kochi deserves 1–2 days if your schedule allows.

💡 See our detailed Ernakulam/Kochi itinerary for a full day-by-day plan.

Option B: Munnar

Drive from Alappuzha to Munnar (about 4.5–5 hours via Kottayam and Thodupuzha). Munnar is Kerala's premier hill station — endless rolling tea plantations, the endangered Nilgiri Tahr at Eravikulam National Park, the scenic Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, Kundala Lake, and the breathtaking sunrise from Top Station (the highest point on the Munnar–Kodaikanal road). The drive itself is beautiful, climbing from the lowland plains into the Western Ghats through cardamom and tea estates. Munnar deserves 2–3 days.

💡 See our detailed Idukki/Munnar itinerary for a full day-by-day plan.
