Munnar tea plantations, Kolukumalai sunrise, Chinnar thorn forests, Periyar boat safari, spice gardens, and windswept southern highlands.

Three to four days covering the best of Idukki — Munnar's tea plantations and wildlife parks, a legendary sunrise at the world's highest tea plantation, a boat safari through tiger country in Thekkady, spice gardens, and the windswept plateaus of the southern highlands.

🏨We recommend 2 nights in Munnar and 1 night in Thekkady. If doing Day 4, add a night in Thekkady or Peerumedu.
Day 1

Munnar — Tea Plantations, Eravikulam & Top Station

Arrive in Munnar and explore the hill station's highlights — endangered Nilgiri Tahr, tea heritage, misty dams, and panoramic views from the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border.

8:00 AM
🚗

Arrive in Munnar

Reach Munnar from Kochi (about 130 km, 4–5 hours by road via Adimali) or Kottayam (about 150 km, 4.5 hours). The drive passes through rubber plantations in the lowlands, gradually climbing through spice gardens, tea estates, and waterfalls into the misty hills. Check in to your hotel and freshen up.

9:00 AM

Eravikulam National Park

Head to Eravikulam National Park, 15 km from Munnar — the last stronghold of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. A shuttle bus takes you into the park where trails wind through high-altitude grasslands on the slopes of Anamudi (2,695m). The Nilgiri Tahr graze within metres of visitors. The misty mountain views are spectacular.

💡 Book tickets online in advance at eravikulamnationalpark.in — slots fill up fast. Park opens at 7 AM. Closed occasionally during calving season (January–February).

11:30 AM

Tea Museum

Visit the KDHP Tea Museum — original British-era machinery from the 1880s, photographs of early planters, a live demonstration of tea processing, and a tasting session of fresh Munnar tea.

💡 Open 9 AM – 4 PM, closed Mondays. Entry ₹75.

1:00 PM

Lunch

Lunch in Munnar town. Try Bamboo Chicken at a roadside stall (chicken slow-cooked inside bamboo over an open fire), or Kerala-style fish curry and rice at SN Restaurant or Rapsy.

2:30 PM

Mattupetty Dam & Echo Point

Drive to Mattupetty Dam (13 km) — a scenic reservoir surrounded by tea plantations and shola forests. Take a speed boat ride, then continue to Echo Point (3 km further) where your voice echoes across the valley. End at Kundala Lake for a pedal boat ride.

4:30 PM

Top Station — Sunset

Drive 35 km to Top Station — the highest point in Munnar at 1,880 metres. Panoramic views of the Tamil Nadu plains, the Theni valley, and on clear days, the Vaigai Dam. This is where the Neelakurinji flowers bloom once every 12 years, carpeting the hills in blue.

💡 Carry a light jacket — it's windy and cool, even in summer. The drive takes about 1.5 hours on winding roads.

7:00 PM

Dinner & Overnight in Munnar

Return to Munnar for dinner. Pick up homemade chocolates and spices from the town's shops — Munnar is known for its cocoa, coffee, and fruit-flavoured chocolates, as well as cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon.

Day 2

Kolukumalai Sunrise, Devikulam & Chinnar

A pre-dawn jeep adventure to the world's highest tea plantation for sunrise, a peaceful lake in the afternoon, and a trek through dry thorn forests.

3:30 AM
🚗

Jeep Ride to Kolukumalai

Start before dawn for the iconic Kolukumalai jeep ride. The steep, rough 4x4 trail climbs through tea estates and eucalyptus forests with hairpin bends to reach 2,400 metres — the world's highest organic tea plantation on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. The adventure of the ride itself is unforgettable.

💡 Book a jeep the previous evening through your hotel or a local operator. The ride takes about 1.5–2 hours. Dress warmly — it's very cold at this altitude before dawn.

5:30 AM

Kolukumalai — Sunrise

Watch the sunrise from Kolukumalai — one of the most legendary sunrise spots in South India. As the first light hits the peaks, a sea of clouds fills the valleys below while the surrounding mountains glow golden. After the sunrise, visit the old tea factory with its original British-era machinery and enjoy a cup of fresh high-altitude tea.

8:30 AM
🚗

Return to Munnar & Breakfast

Descend back to Munnar by jeep. Have a late breakfast at your hotel or one of the town's restaurants.

10:30 AM

Devikulam & Sita Devi Lake

Drive 7 km to Devikulam — a serene hill town with the tranquil Sita Devi Lake, a natural spring-fed lake surrounded by tea estates. According to legend, Sita from the Ramayana bathed in this lake. The calm waters, surrounding tea plantations, and cool mountain air make it a peaceful stop.

12:30 PM
🚗

Lunch & Drive to Chinnar

Have lunch in Munnar, then drive 60 km north to Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary (about 1.5 hours). The landscape transforms dramatically — from lush green tea estates to the dry deciduous and thorn forests of the Western Ghats rain shadow.

2:30 PM

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Explore Chinnar — one of the last habitats of the endangered Indian star tortoise. The sanctuary's dry thorn forests are strikingly different from the rest of Kerala. Take a guided nature walk or the Thoovanam Waterfalls trek (8 km round trip) through tribal settlements and dry forest, ending at a stunning waterfall in a rocky gorge. Look for grizzled giant squirrels, elephants, and bonnet macaques.

💡 The Thoovanam trek takes 3–4 hours round trip. If time is short, the shorter nature walk near the entrance is also rewarding. Carry water.

6:00 PM
🚗

Return to Munnar

Drive back to Munnar for dinner and overnight stay. If you're moving to Thekkady the next day, you can stay in Chinnar instead — accommodations are available through the Munnar Wildlife Division.

Day 3

Thekkady — Periyar Boat Safari, Spice Gardens & Martial Arts

Travel to Thekkady for a boat safari on Periyar Lake (elephants, bison, birds), tour a spice plantation, and watch a Kalaripayattu martial arts show.

7:00 AM
🚗

Drive from Munnar to Thekkady

The drive from Munnar to Thekkady is about 110 km (3.5–4 hours) through some of Kerala's most scenic hill roads — spice gardens, cardamom plantations, and forest-lined valleys. Stop for tea and fresh spice purchases along the way. Check in to your hotel in Thekkady.

11:00 AM

Periyar Lake Boat Safari

Board the KTDC boat for a 1.5-hour cruise on Periyar Lake — the centrepiece of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. As the boat glides along the densely forested shores, watch for wild elephants bathing, sambar deer, gaur (Indian bison), langurs, wild boar, and a rich variety of waterbirds. Tiger sightings are rare but the atmosphere is electric.

💡 Book KTDC boat tickets online in advance — the 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM slots offer the best wildlife sightings. Binoculars are very useful here.

1:00 PM

Lunch

Lunch near the Thekkady junction. Try the local Kerala meal with fish curry, or the famous Cardamom-flavoured dishes specific to this spice country.

2:30 PM

Spice Plantation Tour

Visit one of Thekkady's spice plantations — guided walks through gardens growing cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, and coffee. The guide explains the growing process, points out each plant, and lets you taste fresh spices off the vine. Most tours include a visit to the processing area and a spice shop.

💡 Abraham's Spice Garden and Connemara Spice Trail are popular options. Tours last about 1–1.5 hours.

4:30 PM

Bamboo Rafting or Border Hiking (Optional)

For the adventurous, Thekkady offers bamboo rafting on Periyar Lake — a quieter, more intimate way to explore the forest than the boat safari. Alternatively, the border hiking trek follows the edges of the sanctuary through tribal areas and forest trails with a guide.

6:30 PM

Kalaripayattu Show

Attend a traditional Kalaripayattu (Kerala martial arts) performance at the Kadathanadan Kalari Centre in Thekkady. The 1-hour show features acrobatic combat, sword fighting, flexible body movements, and fire stunts — an impressive display of Kerala's ancient martial art tradition.

💡 Shows typically start at 6 PM or 7 PM. Book seats in advance during peak season. Entry around ₹200–₹300.

8:00 PM

Dinner & Overnight in Thekkady

Dinner in Thekkady. Try the Bamboo Chicken if you haven't already, or the local fish curry with appam. Many restaurants in the Thekkady junction area offer Kerala, North Indian, and Chinese cuisine.

Day 4 (Optional)

Ramakkalmedu, Peerumedu & Panchalimedu

Explore the quieter southern highlands of Idukki — a windswept plateau with views of Tamil Nadu, a colonial hill station, and a mythological hilltop viewpoint.

7:00 AM
🚗

Drive from Thekkady to Ramakkalmedu

Head south to Ramakkalmedu — about 70 km from Thekkady (roughly 2 hours via Nedumkandam). The route passes through cardamom and tea plantations with mountain views.

9:00 AM

Ramakkalmedu

Stand on the windswept plateau at 1,100 metres with unobstructed 180-degree views of the Tamil Nadu plains stretching to the horizon. The plateau is one of the windiest spots in Kerala — a wind farm with rows of turbines adds to the dramatic landscape. The large statue of Kuravan and Kurathi (legendary tribal figures) marks the main viewpoint. On clear mornings, the sunrise here is extraordinary.

10:30 AM
🚗

Drive to Peerumedu

Head west to Peerumedu — about 40 km (1 hour). The route passes through rubber and cardamom plantations.

11:30 AM

Peerumedu

Explore this quiet colonial-era hill station at 1,000 metres, named after the Sufi saint Peer Mohammed. Once the summer retreat of the Travancore royals, Peerumedu has a charming atmosphere with old bungalows, churches, and sprawling plantations of tea, coffee, and cardamom. Visit Thrissanku Hills or Grampi for short treks with misty valley views.

1:00 PM

Lunch

Lunch at one of the small restaurants in Peerumedu or Kuttikkanam — simple Kerala meals with fresh local produce.

2:00 PM

Panchalimedu

Drive 10 km from Kuttikkanam to Panchalimedu — a scenic hilltop viewpoint linked to the Pandava legends from the Mahabharata. An easy, well-paved rock walkway leads to the summit with benches, rain shelters, and pillared halls along the way. The views from the top are sweeping — green valleys, distant hills, and mist rolling through the gaps. Suitable for all ages.

3:30 PM
🚗

Departure

From Peerumedu/Kuttikkanam, you can head to Kottayam (about 70 km, 2 hours) for the railway station, or continue to Alappuzha (about 120 km, 3.5 hours) for the backwaters. Kochi airport is about 140 km (3.5 hours) via the Kottayam route.
