Overnight houseboat cruise, temples, palaces, island sunsets, and a day in Kumarakom.

Two to three days exploring the best of Alappuzha and Kumarakom — an overnight houseboat cruise through the legendary backwaters, temples, palaces, beach walks, island sunsets, and world-class birdwatching on Day 3 at Kumarakom.

🛶We recommend staying overnight on the houseboat (Day 1) and in Alappuzha town (Day 2). For Day 3, you can stay in Kumarakom or head to Kottayam.
Day 1

Alappuzha Backwaters — Houseboat Overnight Cruise

Board a traditional houseboat and cruise through the famed Alappuzha backwaters — canals, lagoons, Kuttanad rice paddies, and island villages. Spend the night on the water.

11:00 AM

Board the Houseboat at Alappuzha

Check in to your houseboat (kettuvallam) at the Finishing Point Jetty or ATDC boat jetty in Alappuzha. Most overnight houseboats depart around 11 AM – 12 PM. The traditional rice barges have been converted into floating hotels with air-conditioned bedrooms, attached bathrooms, a dining area, and an open-air deck.

💡 Book the houseboat in advance, especially during peak season (December–February). A standard 1-bedroom overnight houseboat costs ₹6,000–₹15,000. Confirm the route — the best routes go through Kuttanad and the narrow village canals.

12:30 PM

Lunch on the Houseboat

The boat crew cooks a fresh Kerala lunch on board — rice, sambar, avial, fish curry, and the star: Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish baked in banana leaf with spices). Dine on the deck as the boat drifts past coconut palms, paddy fields, and village life.

2:00 PM

Cruise through Kuttanad

The houseboat enters the heart of Kuttanad — the below-sea-level farming region. Watch farmers tending paddy fields that sit metres below the waterline, bunds holding back the lake, toddy tappers climbing palms, and children playing on the banks. The boat navigates narrow canals that open into wide lagoons and back again.

4:00 PM

Punnamada Lake

The houseboat cruises into Punnamada Lake — the venue of the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race. The vast expanse of water, fringed by palms and dotted with country boats, is spectacular in the late afternoon light.

5:30 PM

Sunset on the Backwaters

The boat anchors at a scenic spot for sunset. Watch the sky turn golden and orange over the water — one of the most photographed moments in Kerala. The boat may stop at small islands where vendors sell fried fish eggs, banana chips, and local toddy.

7:00 PM

Dinner & Night on the Boat

The crew prepares a fresh dinner — prawns, fish, duck roast, rice, and Kerala-style vegetables. As evening falls, the boat anchors for the night in a quiet stretch. Dine on the deck under the stars with the gentle lapping of water and the distant calls of night birds. Sleep rocked by the water.

Day 2

Alappuzha Town — Temple, Beach, Palace & Islands

Disembark from the houseboat and explore Alappuzha town — a historic temple, the beach pier, a royal palace, and a sunset island.

7:00 AM

Sunrise & Breakfast on the Houseboat

Wake up to sunrise over the backwaters — mist rising off the water, the first light filtering through palms, and the sounds of village life beginning. Enjoy breakfast on the deck — appam, egg curry, fresh fruit, and Kerala-style coffee. The boat returns to the jetty by mid-morning.

9:30 AM

Disembark & Drive to Ambalapuzha Temple

Disembark at the Alappuzha jetty and drive to the Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple — about 15 km south (30 minutes). This 15th-century temple is famous for its divine Paal Payasam (milk pudding), offered as prasadam to all visitors.

💡 Dress code applies — men should wear mundu/dhoti and women should wear saree or salwar. The Paal Payasam is served free of charge.

11:00 AM

Krishnapuram Palace

Continue 30 km south to Krishnapuram Palace — an 18th-century palace built by Marthanda Varma of Travancore. The palace showcases traditional Kerala architecture with gabled roofs, dormer windows, and an inner courtyard. Its highlight is the largest single mural painting in Kerala — the 'Gajendra Moksham' (49 sq metres), depicting Lord Vishnu rescuing the elephant king. A small museum displays antique sculptures, coins, and paintings.

1:00 PM

Lunch

Return to Alappuzha town for lunch. Head to a toddy shop for the authentic experience — duck roast, tapioca with fish curry, Karimeen fry, and fresh toddy. Or try Thaff, Halais, or Cassia for a more conventional restaurant meal.

2:30 PM

Alappuzha Beach & Pier

Walk along the Alappuzha beach promenade and the old sea bridge (pier) — one of the oldest on the Malabar coast, extending into the Arabian Sea. Visit Vijaya Beach Park, the lighthouse, and browse the food stalls. The beach is not ideal for swimming but the pier walk and the sea breeze are lovely.

4:00 PM

Thanneermukkam Bund

Drive 25 km east to Thanneermukkam Bund — one of the largest mud regulators in India, stretching 1.4 km across Vembanad Lake. The bund separates saltwater (west) from freshwater (east) to protect Kuttanad's below-sea-level farms. Walk along the bund for panoramic lake views on both sides — a great photography spot.

5:30 PM

Kakkathuruthu Island — Sunset

Head to Kakkathuruthu (Crow Island) for sunset. As the sun goes down, thousands of crows descend from all directions to roost in the island's trees — a dramatic spectacle against the golden sky. A short boat ride from the Punnamada area gets you there.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Return to Alappuzha for dinner. Try the prawn masala or fish moilee at a waterfront restaurant. Stay overnight in Alappuzha — several heritage homestays and hotels are available near the beach and canal areas.

Day 3 (Optional)

Kumarakom — Bird Sanctuary, Canoe Ride & Vembanad Lake

Cross to the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake for a day in Kumarakom — world-class birdwatching, a canoe ride through hidden canals, and a visit to Pathiramanal Island.

7:30 AM
🚗

Drive to Kumarakom

Kumarakom is about 30 km east of Alappuzha (roughly 1 hour by road), on the opposite shore of Vembanad Lake. Start early for the best birdwatching light.

8:30 AM

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Walk through the 14-acre Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary on the shores of Vembanad Lake. Early morning is prime time — spot herons, egrets, kingfishers, cormorants, and migratory species from Siberia and the Himalayas (especially November to February). The trails wind through mangroves and lush greenery.

💡 The sanctuary opens at 6 AM. Carry binoculars. Keep noise to a minimum for the best sightings.

10:30 AM

Backwater Canoe Ride

Take a canoe or shikara ride through Kumarakom's narrow backwater canals — past paddy fields, coconut groves, and tiny islands. These smaller boats navigate intimate waterways that houseboats cannot reach. You'll see fishermen casting nets, toddy tappers at work, and kingfishers diving for fish.

💡 A 1–2 hour canoe ride costs ₹500–₹1,500 and can be arranged at the jetty near the bird sanctuary.

12:30 PM

Lunch at Kumarakom

Enjoy a lakeside Kerala meal — Karimeen Pollichathu, prawns, rice, and avial. The Tharavadu Restaurant, Waterscape Restaurant, or local toddy shops are all excellent.

2:00 PM

Pathiramanal Island

Take a boat from the Kumarakom jetty to Pathiramanal Island — a small island in the middle of Vembanad Lake accessible only by boat. The name means "Sands of Midnight." Over 90 bird species have been recorded here. Shaded walking trails wind through the island's lush greenery — it can be explored in 30–45 minutes.

💡 Boats are available at the KTDC jetty. The ride takes about 15 minutes each way.

4:00 PM

Pandavan Para (Optional Detour)

If you have extra time and a car, drive about 45 km east to Pandavan Para — a hilltop viewpoint in the eastern highlands. Rocky formations associated with the Pandava legend from the Mahabharata, surrounded by rubber plantations and lush valleys. Best during monsoon when the greenery is at its peak. The detour adds about 2.5 hours to the day.

5:30 PM

Sunset on Vembanad Lake

Return to the Kumarakom waterfront for a sunset boat ride on Vembanad Lake — India's longest lake. The golden light over the vast water, coconut palms silhouetted against the sky, and the stillness of evening make this a perfect ending to three days of backwater exploration.

7:00 PM
🚗

Dinner & Departure

Have dinner in Kumarakom or head to Kottayam town (14 km) for the famous Kottayam-style Beef Fry with Porotta. Kottayam Railway Station is well connected, and Kochi airport is about 70 km north (1.5–2 hours).
