A full day in Alappuzha — canoe rides through the below-sea-level villages of Kuttanad, sacred Paal Payasam at Ambalapuzha Temple, and sunset at Crow Island with thousands of birds returning to roost.

💡If visiting in August, check the Nehru Trophy Boat Race schedule — the snake boat race on Punnamada Lake is one of Kerala's most spectacular events.

Arrive at Alappuzha

Reach Alappuzha town — well connected by rail (Alappuzha Railway Station) and road. If coming from Kochi, it's about 55 km (1.5 hours by road). Head to the ATDC or KTDC boat jetty near the Alappuzha Bus Stand to start your backwater adventure.

8:30 AM

Backwater Canoe Ride through Kuttanad

Board a small canoe or shikara for a 2–3 hour ride through the narrow canals of Kuttanad — one of the few places on earth where farming is done below sea level. The canoe glides past paddy fields, coconut groves, toddy tappers climbing palms, fishermen casting nets, and tiny island villages. This is the intimate backwater experience that houseboats cannot offer.

💡 Canoe rides can be arranged at the boat jetty or through local tour operators. A 2–3 hour ride costs ₹500–₹1,500. Morning is the best time — cooler weather and more activity on the canals.

11:00 AM

Kainakari Village

The canoe ride can include a stop at Kainakari — a picture-perfect island village in the heart of the backwaters, accessible only by boat. Narrow canals serve as roads, country boats are the school buses, and life revolves around the water. Walk through the village, interact with locals, and see traditional coir-making if you're lucky.

12:30 PM

Lunch — Toddy Shop or Lakeside Restaurant

Head back to Alappuzha town for a traditional Kerala lunch. For the authentic experience, visit a toddy shop serving fresh toddy (fermented coconut sap) alongside Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish baked in banana leaf), duck roast, tapioca with fish curry, and rice. Alternatives include Thaff, Halais, or Cassia — popular restaurants in town.

2:00 PM

Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple

Visit the historic Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple — about 15 km south of Alappuzha town (30 minutes by road). This 15th-century temple is famous for its Paal Payasam (milk pudding), offered as prasadam to all visitors. Legend has it that Lord Krishna himself asked for this offering. The temple's murals and traditional Kerala architecture are also worth admiring.

💡 The temple is open to all, but there's a dress code — men should wear mundu/dhoti and women should wear saree or salwar. The Paal Payasam is served free of charge.

3:30 PM

Alappuzha Beach & Pier

Return to Alappuzha town and head to the beach. The old sea bridge (pier) — one of the oldest in the Malabar coast — extends into the Arabian Sea and is a lovely spot for a walk. The beach promenade is lined with parks, a lighthouse, and food stalls. The Vijaya Beach Park next to the pier is a nice spot to relax.

5:00 PM

Kakkathuruthu Island — Sunset

For one of the most atmospheric sunsets in Kerala, take a short boat ride to Kakkathuruthu (Crow Island) in the backwaters. As the sun sets, thousands of crows descend from all directions to roost in the island's trees — a dramatic silhouette against the golden sky. The island also has a small temple and coconut groves.

💡 Boats to Kakkathuruthu leave from the Punnamada Jetty area. The ride takes about 15–20 minutes. Plan to arrive by 5 PM for the best sunset and crow spectacle.

6:30 PM

Dinner & Departure

Return to Alappuzha town for dinner. Try the prawn curry or Karimeen fry at one of the waterfront restaurants. After dinner, head to the railway station or continue to your next destination.
