You can take a house boat ride from Kumarakom to explore the backwater. The house boats could arrange a trip with night stay in the boat. Typical route will be Kumarakom to Aleppy and back. Typical house boats have air-conditioned and bathroom attached rooms. The boat will take you through the backwaters and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and the local life. The boat would stop at islands that sell fried fish eggs and local alcohol, and would stop at the sunset for fishing - the fish that the boat staff catches using a hook will be cooked for you for dinner.

You can also visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, which is located on the shores of Vembanad Lake. The sanctuary is home to a variety of bird species, including migratory birds that visit during the winter months. 🚌 Regular KSRTC bus service is available. KSRTC buses from the Vaikom, Cherthala, Alappuzha, and Kottayam depots operate services on the Kumarakom route.

Ilavazhapoonchira

Ilaveezhapoonchira is a dreamlike valley sprawled across thousands of acres. It is located approximately 55 km from Kottayam and 20 km from Thodupuzha. Each of the lush green hillocks that stand guard for the valley rises to around 3200 feet above sea level.

This spot is widely regarded as the best place from which to enjoy the most magical sunrise and sunset.

The highest point in the Ilaveezhapoonchira Range is the Kannadipara or the Rock Mirror. Illikkal Kallu, one of the best viewpoints in the state is yet another destination that's just a stone's throw away from Ilaveezhapoonchira.

One of the most sought after trekking spots in the state, the summit of Ilaveezhapunchira offers you a glimpse of a plethora of districts, including Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Thrissur as well as the Malankara reservoir spread over the steep valleys. 🚌 From Kottayam Bus Stand, limited KSRTC buses run to Ilaveezhapoonchira. Alternatively, take a bus to Melukavu (about 15 km from Ilaveezhapoonchira) and arrange local transport from there.

🚗 The best option is to book a taxi or Jeep to Ilaveezhapoonchira, especially given the limited public transport and hilly terrain.

🚌 You can take a KSRTC bus to nearby towns such as Kaduthuruthi or Thalayolapparamb, and then take an auto rickshaw or taxi from there.

Illikkal Kallu

The short jeep drive from the base to the top through the winding road is a thrilling adventure. If you are up to it, you can also opt for a hike up this path. The viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the deep valleys and the mist-covered hills.

The best time to visit Illickal Kallu is during the monsoon season when the surrounding landscape is lush and vibrant. The trek to the top is relatively easy, and is about 1 kilometer long.

🚙 If you are starting from Kottayam, it is better to hire a Jeep or taxi from Kottayam railway station. Since this is a steep hill, a Jeep is the better option.

🚌 From Ernakulam, you can take a bus to Munnar. Local buses are available from Munnar to Illikkal Kallu, and the Munnar-to-Illikkal Kallu bus ride takes about 90 minutes.

Ottupara Hills

🚙 Once you arrive in Erumely, you can hire a Jeep or bike to scale the hill, or take a 4-hour trek from Erumely to enjoy the scenic route.

🥾 Remember that the last 2 km require trekking through forest regardless of the mode of transport.

🚌 Frequent KSRTC buses run to Vagamon from Kottayam bus stand every 30 minutes or so. You can also get buses to Vagamon from Erattupetta, Pala, Trivandrum, and Ernakulam.

⚠️ Note: There are only limited buses from Ernakulam or Trivandrum KSRTC bus stands to Vagamon.

Kottathavalam Hills

Kottathavalam is a place of archaeological interest. A magnificent cave which can be reached by the rock cut steps near the Muruganmala is perfectly interspersed with a naturally green cover that spreads out in all directions. Inside it, people can look at chair shaped carvings, along with depictions of famous legends including Madurai Meenakshi, Ayyappa, Murugan and Kannaki.

It is best to couple visit to Kottathavalam while visiting Vagamon. Vagamon is about 4 kilometers away

Muthukora Hills

🛣️ The nearest place with a paved road is Teekoy (a rubber estate). From Teekoy, it is about a 5 km off-road ride and then a 2 km trek.

🚌 Alternatively, take a private bus or KSRTC bus from Kottayam to Erattupetta Bus Station, then hire a jeep.

🚕 Distance from Erattupetta Bus Stand to Marmala Waterfalls is about 12 km.

🚕 From Illikkal Kallu, it is about 4.5 km to Kattikkayam Waterfalls (around 15 minutes by road).

🚶 The last part of the journey requires a brief trek to the falls.
