Abhayaranyam Ecotourism, located in Kaprikkad near Kunnathunadu in Ernakulam district, Kerala, is a serene wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center managed by the Kerala Forest Department. It serves as an extension of the Kodanad Elephant Training Centre, offering a natural habitat for rescued and orphaned animals, especially elephants and deer. Spread across lush greenery on the banks of the Periyar River, Abhayaranyam is ideal for eco-tourism, environmental education, and nature walks. A haven for animals, Abhayaranyam is a nature rehabilitation centre for orphaned wildlife situated near Kaprikad at Kunnathukadu Taluk in Ernakulam district. Nestled on the banks of River Periyar, this place attracts numerous visitors to see wildlife in their natural habitat and to enjoy the deep woods here. One may also enjoy the waters of gushing Periyar River.

Home to various species of birds, butterflies, spiders, and mushrooms, Abhayaranyam has an elephant shelter and also a training center for mahouts. The place also has a community hall, nature camps, and many more.

Bhoothathankettu is a picturesque dam and tourist spot in Ernakulam district, Kerala. It is situated outside the village of Pindimana, about 10 km away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 km away from the main city of Kochi. The dam offers breath-taking views of the Periyar River, lush green forests, and towering hills. The Forest Department offers boating packages in the dam.

You can hire a local guide at Bhoothathankettu. Listening to the mythology and history of the dam is an amusing experience. Boating options are available at the Dam. You may want to visit the nearby Sundari waterfalls as well. You need to trek about 1 kilometers through the forest to reach the old Bhoothathankettu dam. Explore the cave and nearby temple while you are there.

Nestled behind the Kerala High Court in the heart of Kochi, the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary spans a compact 2.74 ha (0.0274 km²) yet plays an outsized role as the city's "green lung" . This tidal wetland, with its shallow lake connected to the Kochi backwaters, supports a thriving ecosystem amid the urban hustle .

Mangalavanam is a nesting ground for a large variety of migratory birds is one of the best places for birdwatchers and twitchers. This green paradise is also a roosting place for residents as well as migratory birds. A survey conducted in 2006 revealed that there were 194 birds belonging to 32 species, in Mangalavanam.

The place gives also shelter to species of mammals including Indian flying-fox, painted bat, Eurasian otter, house rat and three-striped palm squirrel. Further, we have two species of amphibians, Indian cricket frog (limnonectes limnocharis) and Asian Common Toad (duttaphrynus melanostictus).

Please don't be surprised if you don't find any birds in this sanctuary - recent reviews mention that Mangalavanam is poorly maintained, and that there were no birds at all.

Mahagony Thottam, originally known as Mulamkuzhy, is a serene forest located near Malayattoor in Ernakulam district. It is renowned for its towering mahogany trees, some of which are over a century old. This tranquil spot offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city life. The park's main attraction is its collection of massive mahogany trees, offering a breathtaking sight. Mahagony Thottam is easily accessible by road and is located 11 km from Malayattoor.

You can take a bath in the river in this tourist spot. Changing rooms are available for men and women. You can purchase tickets on the forest conservation office here. There are no restaurants at this place, so it is better to carry food and drinks with you while visiting Mahagony Thottam.

Panamkuzhi, located near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, Kerala, is an emerging ecotourism destination that offers a serene and rejuvenating experience. It's a part of the Abhayaranyam project, focusing on wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism. Kerala Forest Department offers river and sightseeing packages for visitors.

Located about 25km from Aluva, it is easily accessible for one-day picnics.

Reach in the morning, and you can trip away dipping your feet in the cool waters, swimming in the river, taking a stroll along the banks, or sitting on the rocks and boulders with a book.

Coracle boat rides are available at the center.

Paniyeli Poru offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. This pristine location, caressed by the serene Periyar River, is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. It is located in the Ernakulam district approximately 35 kilometers from Aluva. Visitors can embark on a thrilling trek through the lush forests and along the riverbanks, leading to the stunning Paniyeli Poru waterfall. The moderate-level trek offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The Kerala Forest Department offers sightseeing package as part of the ecotourism program.

Paniyeli Poru is an ideal location for one-day trekking. This 1.5 km trekking through riverside pathway will take you to the waterfalls. After walking around 400 m one has to cross the river by foot to reach the forest and walk forward about a kilometer to reach the cascade. You can also see numerous small islands in the river and you can hang out and roam around the jungle. It is not a hard trek and is easy when the water is low.

Suvarnodhyanam Biological Ecotourism Park is a tranquil oasis located near Nedumbassery in Ernakulam district. This unique park offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city life, providing visitors with a chance to connect with nature. The park showcases a variety of native and exotic plant species, including orchids, ferns, and medicinal plants. It also houses a diverse range of bird species and other wildlife.

Anakottapara, a serene eco-tourism destination nestled amidst the verdant hills of Marayoor in Idukki district offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and adventure. The region is home to ancient Muniyaras or megalithic burial chambers, dating back to the Iron Age. These mysterious structures, carved into the rocks, offer a glimpse into the lives of prehistoric people.

The Muniyara Dolmens are stunning prehistoric structures located in Marayoor, dating back to the Neolithic Age. These above ground burial chambers are constructed with large stone slabs, known as megaliths.

Historians have a keen interest in the granite slabs, which are over a thousand years old.

In this area, you can find 15 different types of dolmens that date back to the Neolithic period, between 3000 BC and 14000 BC.

The entry fee is ₹20. As you stroll around, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, especially when the wind picks up the strong breeze really adds a magical touch to your visit.

Anakulam is famous for its close-up encounters with wild elephants. Visitors can often spot herds of elephants, including calves and majestic tuskers, grazing and bathing in the nearby streams. The Kerala Forest Department offers a tickets to visit Illipark as part of the ecotourism program (which gives you better access to viewing area). You can visit the area without tickets as well.

Anakulam is a hidden gem in Kerala, best known for regular sightings of wild elephants moving in herds in their natural habitat. It is one of the rare places where human–elephant conflict is almost nonexistent, thanks to the respectful coexistence practiced by local communities.

Elephants are seen almost daily during late evenings and nights, except in peak monsoon months. The area now offers affordable homestays and dormitories, making it accessible while still retaining its untouched charm.

The best time to visit is November to January, when the region turns lush green and nearby waterfalls are active, allowing visitors to enjoy a complete nature-filled day. Adventure options such as jungle jeep safaris, trekking, and guided forest walks are organized by local operators.

Anakulam also features the Tiger Cave, a naturally formed rock cave known from local folklore, adding a touch of mystery and adventure to the visit. The drive from Mankulam to Munnar via Lakshmi Estate is especially scenic. A forest route from Anakulam to Mamalakandam exists but remains closed.

Chokramudi is a popular trekking destination in Munnar known for its breathtaking views of tea plantations, valleys, and mountains. It's one of the highest peaks in Munnar, offering a challenging yet rewarding trek for adventure enthusiasts. The Chokramudi trek is considered moderately challenging due to its steep ascents and descents. The breathtaking views and serene atmosphere make it a worthwhile experience. The Kerala Forest Department offers a trekking package as part of the ecotourism program.

Please note that this is not a beginner friendly trek- while it’s short (6km total turnaround), the incline and terrain are rather demanding and if you’re not a regular hiker or unfit, this will be very try challenging.

Do note that the guide is only available either at 5:30am or 9am, as they conduct the trek in shifts. You can go without the guide as well.

There is direct sunlight and minimal foliage on the route so carry cap, wear sunscreen and take plenty water and snacks.

Munampu is an eco-tourism center operating under the leadership of the Anjuruli Forest Protection Committee in the Ayyappankovil range of the Kottayam Forest Division. It is accessible via the Kattappana–Kuttikkanam road through a place called Kanchiyar, and from there, a 2-kilometer journey through the road in front of the Kanchiyar Forest Station leads to the Perumkandam area, where the Munampu Eco-tourism Center is located.This area is surrounded by water on three sides.Known as Anjuruli Thuruthu, this location offers a panoramic view of the Idukki Dam’s reservoir, the beautiful sight of water gushing from the Anjuruli tunnel, and a scenic view of the Kalyanathandu hills – all of which make it a unique experience.

Visitors typically combine Munambu with surrounding highlights like Meesapulimala, Idukki Dam, Kalvari Mount, and Cheeyappara Waterfalls.

Rajiv Gandhi Nature Park (also known as Rajiv Gandhi Children's park), nestled in the heart of Marayoor, Idukki district, is a serene haven for nature lovers and a delightful spot for families. The park's centerpiece is a massive banyan tree, one of the largest in India. Its vast canopy provides shade and a cool respite from the tropical sun. The majestic banyan tree in the Park, with its sprawling roots and intricate branches, is a remarkable sight. It is a popular spot for picnics and leisurely walks. The Forest Department offers Park entry as part of the ecotourism program.

Thattathikanam Pine Garden is located within the Murinjapuzha Forest Station limits of the Erumeli Range under the Kottayam Division. Originally established between 1975 and 1985 by the Peermedu research unit of the Forest Department, the pine groves span nine hectares.

Vagamon, often dubbed the "Scotland of India," is a picturesque hill station in the Idukki district. With its rolling hills, lush green meadows, pine forests, and misty mountains, Vagamon offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Visitors can enoy panoramic views of the valleys, tea plantations, and distant mountains. Pine Valley, a serene haven nestled just 6 kilometers from Vagamon, offers a breathtaking escape into nature. The majestic pine trees, standing tall against the backdrop of the misty hills, create a captivating panorama. As the golden sunlight filters through the dense canopy, the forest transforms into a magical realm, inviting visitors to unwind and rejuvenate.

Vagavanam, nestled near the picturesque hill station of Vagamon in Kerala’s Idukki district, offers an enchanting trekking experience through its lush greenery and serene landscapes. This trek, often called the “Windy Walk,” is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The journey begins at the Kerala Forest Department office in Ottamarapara, approximately 8 kilometers from the Vagamon junction. After completing the necessary formalities and obtaining the entry ticket (₹155 per person), visitors embark on a guided trek lasting about 3.5 hours. The trail meanders through tar roads, mud jeep tracks, and grasslands, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. During the monsoon season, the path can be slippery, so it’s advisable to exercise caution.

Participants are required to report to the KFDC Windy Walk booking office (ottamarampara) prior to 15:00LT. It is highly advisable to confirm the trek schedule and availability via telephone, as adverse weather conditions, such as potential thunderstorms or lightning, may lead to the cancellation of the trek. An experienced guide from KFDC will accompany you throughout the trek.

A small waterfall in the middle of nowhere. The way to reach the falls is beautiful. The roads are very narrow and steep. Good season to visit is right after monsoon as the falls tends to thin out after rains.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary located in Kannur is a hidden gem nestled in the Western Ghats. This sanctuary offers a unique blend of lush forests, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes, making it a perfect destination for ecotourism. The Kerala Forest Department offers Trekking and Off-Road Drive packages for visitors.

The forest is lush green even in summer . The view of forest from the watch tower is amazing. The entire safari is about 15 kms up and down. A forest department guide will accompany you on your drive.

Manjapullu and Paithalmala, located in the Western Ghats of Kannur district, offer a breathtaking escape into nature. Palukachi Mala is one of the most beautiful trekking destinations in the region and a perfect place for anyone who loves nature, adventure, and scenic landscapes. The journey to the top is an enjoyable experience, with a trail surrounded by greenery, fresh air, and peaceful natural surroundings. The trek is moderately challenging, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers who want to spend time outdoors and enjoy a refreshing escape from daily routines.

Palukachi Eco tourism centre is located 5 Km from Kottiyoor Maha Siva Temple. Way to the View point includes 850 M trekking through forest. Palukachi, a serene hill station nestled in the Western Ghats of Kannur offers a unique ecotourism experience. This amazing destination is renowned for its lush green forests, diverse wildlife, and stunning panoramic views. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and distant mountains.

The Purathotti–Paithalmala trek is a scenic forest and grassland trail in Kannur district, Kerala, leading to Paithalmala hilltop at about 1,372 m (4,501 ft). It’s a moderate 2‑hour trek each way, starting near Kudiyanmala/Purathotti, with dense shola forest, open grasslands, and panoramic views of Kodagu and Kannur plains.

If you're looking for a calm and relaxing environment surrounded by nature's beauty, Vanaparvam Biodiversity Park is a great choice. Its peaceful ambiance and diverse wildlife make it perfect for a day out with family or friends. Home to a variety of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies, offering a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts. A small shop at the entrance sells snacks and cool drinks. Clean restrooms are available inside the park.

The majestic Kakkayam Dam, built across the Chaliyar River, is a breathtaking sight. The reservoir formed by the dam offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and birdwatching. The name "Urakkuzhi" means "melting hole," which beautifully describes the way water disappears into narrow rock formations, creating a stunning visual effect. If you are visiting Peruvannamuzhi dam you should visit Peruvannamuzhi Eco-Tourism Centre. A crocodile rehabilitation center, Snake rehabilitation center, Butterfly park and a children's park are located here.

Chaliyar View eco tourism package offers a unique opportunity to experience the serene beauty of the Chaliyar River.

With a 5-km stretch broadened by the Kallar River, Adavi welcomes you to experience nature at its best. The package is available in two slots – one is short ride and the other long ride. The place is best during monsoon as the river is full and you can experience the fresh air, and soak yourself in the scenery of pristine greenery, and clear waters of the Kallar River.

Gavi is one of the most popular eco tourism centers and wildlife attractions in Kerala. A serene, silent place on the lap of nature where you get to surround yourself with the wilderness. Chembra Peak is also renowned as one of the best viewpoints in Wayanad, providing panoramic vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys. Meenmutty Waterfalls, a testament to Wayanad's mesmerizing allure, captivates visitors with its pristine beauty. Tucked away amidst the lush greenery of the forest, within the enclave of Makkiyad station in the Mananthavady range, this Ecotourism center was born during the years 2015-2016. Now, it stands proudly as the cornerstone of tourism in the region, boasting the highest annual footfall within the North Wayanad Division, beckoning travelers from far and wide to immerse themselves in its splendor.

Muneeshwaran Kunnu, also known as Muneeswaran Hills, is a picturesque hilltop destination located in Wayanad district.
