A walking tour through Kerala's capital — temples, museums, markets, and a sunset by the sea.
Let us stroll through the Trivandrum city, visit a few museums, and wind up the day watching sunset at the beach.
Start your day at the Trivandrum Zoo and the cluster of museums nearby — Napier Museum, Natural History Museum, Sri Chitra Art Gallery, KCS Panikker Museum, and Raja Ravivarma Museum. These are all within walkable distance of each other inside the same compound. Spend about 2–2.5 hours exploring.
💡 Museums open at 10 AM and are closed on Mondays.
A short walk from the museum compound, this beautiful palace sits atop a hill surrounded by well-maintained gardens. Great for photos and a quick breather before lunch.
Head to one of the local restaurants near East Fort for an authentic Kerala meal (sadya). Try Ariya Nivaas, Villa Maya, or Zam Zam for different takes on Kerala cuisine.
Visit the iconic Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple (open 5 PM–8 PM, Hindus only, dress code required). Right next door is the Puthen Malika Palace Museum (Kuthira Malika) — open to all visitors, with stunning Kerala architecture and 122 carved horse figures. Closed on Mondays.
Take a walk through Trivandrum's oldest and busiest market. A sensory experience — colourful spices, fresh flowers, fruits, textiles, and local goods. Great for picking up souvenirs.
The drive from Chalai to Kovalam Beach is about 14 km and takes roughly 45 minutes depending on traffic. You can take an auto-rickshaw, taxi, or use a ride-hailing app.
Wind up the day at Kovalam Beach, about 16 km from the city centre. Watch the sun dip into the Arabian Sea from the iconic lighthouse beach. Climb the Vizhinjam Lighthouse for panoramic views. There are many shacks and restaurants along the beach where you can enjoy fresh seafood and local cuisine.
💡 Leave by 4:30 PM to reach in time for sunset.
Have dinner at one of the beachside restaurants in Kovalam — the seafood is fresh and the setting is scenic with the sound of waves. You also have the option to return to the city for dinner, but dining at Kovalam is a more memorable experience.
