An 18th-century fort, a heritage Brahmin village, grand dam gardens, a traditional ancestral home, and a hilltop sunset over the Western Ghats.

A day through Palakkad's heritage and landscapes — from an 18th-century fort and heritage village in the morning, to Kerala's rice-bowl countryside, a grand dam with gardens, a traditional ancestral home, and a sunset over the Western Ghats.

7:00 AM

Start from Palakkad Town

Begin from Palakkad town centre. If arriving by train, Palakkad Junction is well connected to Kochi, Thrissur, Coimbatore, and other major cities. The first stop is just minutes away.

7:30 AM

Palakkad Fort

Start your day at Palakkad Fort (Tipu's Fort) — an iconic 18th-century granite fortification in the heart of town, originally built by Hyder Ali of Mysore around 1766, later used during Tipu Sultan's campaigns, and subsequently taken over by the British. The well-preserved square fort with its surrounding moat, thick walls, and a Hanuman temple inside is one of the best-maintained forts in Kerala. Walk around the ramparts and enjoy the park-like grounds in the morning light.

Tip: The fort is a protected ASI monument. Entry is free. Best enjoyed in the cooler morning hours before the sun gets strong.

8:30 AM

Kalpathy Heritage Village & Temple

Drive 2 km to Kalpathy — a centuries-old agraharam (Brahmin settlement) on the banks of the Kalpathy River. Walk along the single main street lined with traditional Tamil-style houses. At the heart of the village is the Kalpathy Vishwanatha Temple, known for the annual Ratholsavam (chariot festival). The village has been submitted for UNESCO World Heritage consideration and is a living museum of Dravidian temple architecture.

Tip: The Kalpathy Ratholsavam (chariot festival) takes place over 10 days in November. The village is quiet and atmospheric in the morning — a great time for photography.

9:30 AM

Jainmedu Jain Temple

A short detour to the historic Jainmedu Jain Temple in Palakkad town, dedicated to Lord Mahavira. The temple features Dravidian architectural elements with Jain iconography and is a reminder of the once-significant Jain presence in Kerala. Culturally linked to the great Malayalam poet Kumaranasan.

10:15 AM

Drive to Malampuzha

Head to Malampuzha, about 10 km from Palakkad town. The drive passes through paddy fields and offers views of the Western Ghats ahead.

10:30 AM

Malampuzha Dam & Gardens

Arrive at Malampuzha — one of the most popular tourist destinations in Palakkad. The dam across the Malampuzha River creates a scenic reservoir framed by the Ghats. Explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, take the ropeway for aerial views, visit the rock garden, Japanese garden, and aquarium. Boating on the reservoir is available and offers lovely views.

Tip: The ropeway and gardens have separate entry fees. Allow 2–2.5 hours to explore the full complex. Carry water and sunscreen.

1:00 PM

Lunch at Malampuzha or Palakkad

Have lunch at a restaurant near Malampuzha or drive back towards Palakkad town. Palakkad is known for its Brahmin vegetarian cuisine — try a traditional Sadya, Elissery (ash gourd and black-eyed peas in coconut gravy), or Kalan. Hotel Noor Jehan in town is popular for Malabar biryani and non-vegetarian options.

2:30 PM

Olappamanna Mana

Drive about 30 km to Vellinezhi to visit Olappamanna Mana — a traditional Namboothiri ancestral home over 300 years old, renowned for its patronage of Kathakali and Chakyar Koothu. The beautifully restored nalukettu (quadrangular house) with wooden carvings and inner courtyard functions as a cultural heritage site. A rare, authentic window into old Kerala's architectural and cultural heritage.

Tip: Check opening hours in advance. Performances of traditional arts are sometimes held here.

4:30 PM

Drive back to Malampuzha via Kava

Head back towards Malampuzha. The drive through the Palakkad countryside with its vast paddy fields — Kerala's rice bowl — is scenic, especially in the golden afternoon light.

5:15 PM

Kava Viewpoint — Sunset

End the day at Kava viewpoint near Malampuzha — perched on a rocky hilltop with unobstructed views of the plains, Malampuzha reservoir, and the Western Ghats silhouette as the sun sets. A short climb from the road leads to the vantage point. The golden-hour views here are spectacular.

Tip: Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset to find a good spot. Carry water — there are no shops at the viewpoint.

6:30 PM

Dinner & Departure

Return to Palakkad town (about 15 km) for dinner. Try Kerala-style Meen Curry (fish curry) or Palakkad Sadya at a local restaurant. If heading onward, Palakkad Junction has good evening train connections to Kochi, Thrissur, and Coimbatore.
