The Purathotti–Paithalmala trek is a scenic forest and grassland trail in Kannur district, Kerala, leading to Paithalmala hilltop at about 1,372 m (4,501 ft). It’s a moderate 2‑hour trek each way, starting near Kudiyanmala/Purathotti, with dense shola forest, open grasslands, and panoramic views of Kodagu and Kannur plains.

Starting Point: Purathotti village near Kudiyanmala (Kannur district).

Altitude: ~1,372 m (4,501 ft).

Trail Length: ~5 km one way; 2 hours each way.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate — muddy trail, forest cover, some steep sections.

Best Season:

Monsoon (July–September): Misty, lush greenery, but leeches are common.

Winter (Jan–Mar): Clear skies, comfortable trekking weather.

Trail Experience Forest Section: Begins with semi‑evergreen shola forest, dense greenery, and rich biodiversity.

Grasslands: After ~2 km, the forest opens into vast grasslands with sweeping views.

Watchtower: A 10‑ft concrete tower at the summit, offering panoramic views.

Suicide Point: A dramatic cliff viewpoint with stunning vistas of Kodagu valleys and Kannur plains.
