Anakulam is famous for its close-up encounters with wild elephants. Visitors can often spot herds of elephants, including calves and majestic tuskers, grazing and bathing in the nearby streams. The Kerala Forest Department offers a tickets to visit Illipark as part of the ecotourism program (which gives you better access to viewing area). You can visit the area without tickets as well.
Anakulam is a hidden gem in Kerala, best known for regular sightings of wild elephants moving in herds in their natural habitat. It is one of the rare places where human–elephant conflict is almost nonexistent, thanks to the respectful coexistence practiced by local communities.
Elephants are seen almost daily during late evenings and nights, except in peak monsoon months. The area now offers affordable homestays and dormitories, making it accessible while still retaining its untouched charm.
The best time to visit is November to January, when the region turns lush green and nearby waterfalls are active, allowing visitors to enjoy a complete nature-filled day. Adventure options such as jungle jeep safaris, trekking, and guided forest walks are organized by local operators.
Anakulam also features the Tiger Cave, a naturally formed rock cave known from local folklore, adding a touch of mystery and adventure to the visit. The drive from Mankulam to Munnar via Lakshmi Estate is especially scenic. A forest route from Anakulam to Mamalakandam exists but remains closed.
